Days of Service Oyster Cage Building

LaPlata, Leonardtown, Lexington Park, and Prince Frederick Rotary Clubs Host Oyster Cage Building Service Day

On Saturday, September 18th, District 7620’s Southern Area Rotary Clubs joined over 1500 individuals and communities who are committed to a cleaner Chesapeake Bay by participating in the Maryland Grow Oysters Program. Through this program, the St. Mary’s River Watershed Association and the Oyster Recovery Program have planted more than six million baby oysters in the St. Mary’s River and one million in the Breton Bay. Once the oysters are about one inch in size, individuals and volunteers plant them into sanctuaries where they are safe to filter the water, establish reef structures, and vibrant environments that provide breeding and enhance the commercial fishery.

Southern Area Rotarians gathered at 8:30 am to begin their work to assemble one hundred oyster cages in support of the MGO program. The Clubs partnered with the Southern Maryland Watershed Association and the Oyster Recovery’s Program for this bay stewardship service event. Bob Lewis, a non-Rotary member, and Executive Director of the St. Mary’s River Watershed Association provided instructions for and guidance with building the cages.

Ten Rotarians and two non- Rotary members participated in the cage building project. The non-Rotary participants included the Executive Director and spouse, the photographers for the service day, and the spouse of a Prince Frederick Rotarian. The group successfully built one-hundred cages in 90 minutes. It was a beautiful day, and the activity went extremely well. It was also an opportunity for members of the four Rotary Clubs to spend time together for fun, fellowship, and service. Photos are also on the St. Mary’s River Watershed Association’s Facebook Page, one of the partners for this service day.
